The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

Introduction by Dr John Tully

Welcome to the Royal College of Psychiatrists ‘Minds in Music’ blog.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to co-ordinate this blog, which I feel is an extension of the excellent work being done by the College in public education and interaction.

I think that of all art forms, music is perhaps most closely related to our emotions and mental health. With this in mind, I hope to share here pieces of music and songs with relevance to mental health issues. Selections will be by musicians who have suffered from mental health problems themselves and/or addressing important issues in mental health. Occasionally, I will invite musicians and others to share their experiences and selections. All categories of music will be included, though mainly contemporary, folk, classical and jazz.

I very much welcome feedback and discussion (and even debate!) on the posts here and I invite mental health professionals and members of the public to contact me with any suggestions for pieces of music or songs to feature. The blog will aim to address issues in a serious way and be mindful of stigma relating to mental illness, but I will strive to be open to a wide range of music and tastes.

I look forward to a musical and interactive experience! I will be posting an entry every few weeks. And yes, of course, you will be able to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Re: Introduction by Dr John Tu
Dear Dr Tully, You have my feedback! I do like the idea to connect the music with the mental health! I was glad to learn especially for one of my favorite composer - Chopin! Thank you for!
