13 December 2011
It's been a hectic week so far, but there are
really good initiatives coming out of work with some items on
suicide prevention.
Through the College's Public Health Lead,
Professor Kam Bhui, and with support from Dr Jonathan Campion and
our Communications department, we are going to seize the initiative
around ‘no public health without mental health’. So look out for
‘did you know’ facts on the website next year.
I've also had a constructive meeting with
NICE, who will be hopefully telling us more of their new
responsibilities, and how we can more readily access their
increasing range of up-to-date evidence base.
The undoubted highlight of last week was the
New Members Reception on Friday. As I watched all those young
doctors, who after hard work and endavour, join the family of the
College as new members I suddently realised why I took on the role
of President.
We heard great talks by Dr Alice Lomax, Chair
of the Psychiatric Trainees Committee – absolutely inspirational –
and also the Registrar, Dr Laurence Mynors-Wallis, on the
importance of our leadership and management skills. The thing I
most enjoyed about the afternoon was the tangible joy and pride of
the families of the new members. And we all know that when you sit
any exam, it is not just you who sits it - it is the whole of
your family. It was really great to meet and talk with the families
after the ceremony.
