The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

About the Examinations Unit

The Examinations Unit is part of the Professional Standards Department and it is responsible for the organisation of the College’s written and clinical MRCPsych Examinations. Membership of the College is the accepted qualification for entry into higher training in psychiatry. Preliminary enquiries from trainees who are interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry should be directed to the Training Section of the Professional Standards Department.

The Examinations Operations Manager and written paper team are responsible for the MRCPsych Papers 1, 2 and 3.

The Examinations Co-ordinator (CASC) and clinical team are responsible for the Clinical Assessment of Skills & Competencies examinations (CASC).

The teams are responsible for processing candidate enquiries, applications, entry and allocation to examination centres, and publication of final results.

The Unit is also responsible for the recruitment, induction and training of College examiners. Continuous Examiner training sessions are held. The CASC Organisation Manager is responsible for all Examiner/CASC centre administration.

The question papers for the Examinations are prepared by the Panels responsible for each paper. All results are monitored by the Examinations Sub-Committee. Regular reports are presented to the Education, Training & Standards Committee to ensure that standards are maintained.

In addition the Monitoring Panel meets twice a year and is concerned with reviewing all aspects of the MRCPsych Examination and the external influences which have an effect upon its provision and development.

MRCPsych Written Paper and CASC enquiries should be directed to: Examinations@rcpsych.ac.uk
