New legislation: Reforming care and
support – better quality care, peace of mind and promoting
independence
The Care and Support White Paper, together
with the
draft Care and Support Bill, has been published and sets out
how the social care system will be transformed from a service that
reacts to crises to one that focuses on prevention and is built
around the needs and goals of people. The Department of Health is
seeking
views on the draft Care and Support Bill. You can post

General Medical Council: Continuing
professional development: guidance for all doctors
New GMC guidance has been developed. The GMC hopes that doctors
will use the guidance to reflect on how their learning and
development improves the quality of care they provide to patients
and for the service in which they work.
Experts urge new recovery focus for heroin
addiction treatment
The National Treatment Agency has
launched a report, Medications in recovery: re-orientating drug
dependence, on the proper ways in which prescribing medication
can help heroin addicts break the hold of their addiction and
recover from dependence.
Harm free care: to educate and
empower nurses to prevent falls on hospital wards
Over 280,000 patient falls are reported from hospitals and
mental health units annually, costing approximately £15 million per
annum. The FallSafe
project report has been published with ‘How to…’ guides for
implementation, including the Falls Prevention Resource pack.
New findings show suicides under home
treatment in England are almost double ward cases
The annual report by the University of Manchester's National
Confidential Inquiry into Homicide and Suicide by People with
Mental Illness is now available.
Independent Police Complaints Commission:
warning over ‘vulnerable’ patients
Nearly half of all people who appear to
have committed suicide after being released by police were known to
have mental health problems. Dame Anne Owers, the chairman of the
IPCC, called for a
"coordinated response to protecting and meeting the needs of this
vulnerable group".
NICE: Better care bid for Autistic
Adults
New NICE Guidance stresses that the NHS should better recognise
the signs of autism in adults to improve their quality of life and
employment opportunities.
Securing dignity in care for older
people in hospitals and care homes
The Commission on Dignity in Care for Older People has
published its final report which contains a series of
recommendations which must be put in place if the care sector is to
successfully tackle one of the biggest challenges it has ever
faced.
Training
programme in care homes aims to reduce antipsychotic
prescriptions
An Alzheimer’s Society
training programme is being rolled out to 150 care homes across the
UK. An initial trial of the
Focussed Intervention Training and Support programme found it
reduced the use of antipsychotics in care homes by 50%.

Expressions of interest to create academic health
science networks sought
Expressions of interest are sought to create
an academic health science
network (AHSNs). The goal of AHSN’s will be to improve patient
and population health outcomes by translating research into
practice and developing and implementing integrated health care
systems. The document sets out the draft designation and
establishment process.
Howard
League for Penal Reform - Commission on Sex in Prison
This independent
Commission
on Sex in Prison will focus on three broad themes:
consensual sex in prisons, coercive sex in prisons, and healthy
sexual development among young people in prison. The purpose of the
Commission is to understand the nature and the scale of the issues
and problems, making a series of recommendations with a view to
making prisons safer.

National Research Ethics
Advisors’ Panel
The National Research Ethics Advisors’ Panel (NREAP) is an
advisory panel established to help with the strategy, quality
assurance and service development of NHS Research Ethics Committees
(NRES) and improve the research environment in the UK. Following a
recent review of the membership and remit of the NREAP, NRES is
seeking to appoint a number of new National Research Ethics
Advisors. Applications are invited from individuals with
considerable expertise and stature in one or more of the following
areas: UK Health Law, Past or Present Chair of an NHS Research
Ethics Committee, Academic Clinical Research, Pharmaceutical
Industry, Understanding of the Issues Facing Patients and/or
Research Participants in the NHS, or Academic Expertise in the
Ethics of Research. The closing date for applications is 20 August
2012
NSPCC: new resource on abuse in
pre-school children for practitioners
The NSPCC and Cardiff University have launched
a new resource to help practitioners identify emotional neglect
and emotional abuse in pre-school children. It is the latest in the
CORE-INFO series of leaflets and is based on a systematic
review of the latest published scientific research into the
features of emotional neglect and emotional abuse in children under
six, conducted by Cardiff University’s Child Protection Systematic
Review group.
New Evidence Updates from NHS
Evidence
Delirium: Evidence Update April 2012 focuses on a
summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical
guideline 99 Diagnosis and management of idiopathic childhood
constipation in primary and secondary care (2010). In
producing the Evidence Update, 348 pieces of evidence were
searched, of which 17 have been chosen for publication.
British
National Formulary App
BNF App is now freely available for download to all who are
eligible for an NHS Athens account.
Free access to British scientific
research within two years
A radical shakeup of academic publishing will
allow papers to be put online and be accessed by universities,
firms and individuals. The government is to unveil plans to make
publicly funded scientific research immediately available for
anyone to read for free by 2014.
