Northern Ireland & Mental Health Legislation

• The Mental Health (Northern Ireland) Order 1986 governs the treatment of people with mental health problems in Northern Ireland. In October 2002, the Department of Health, Social Service and Public Safety (DHSSPS) initiated a wide-ranging, independent review of the law, policies and provision for mental health patients expected to take a minimum of two years to complete.

• Northern Ireland Division responds to consultation on Delivering the Bamford Vision
  The Bamford Review of Mental Health and Learning Disability published a series of 10 reports between 2005 and 2007. In June 2008, the Northern Ireland Executive put a series of proposals for modernising services for people with mental health problems or a learning disability out for consultation. The College's Northern Ireland Division submitted its response on 2 October 2008.
  
• Northern Ireland Division responds to DHSSPS consultation on Guidance on the Termination of Pregnancy
  On 22 September 2008, the Northern Ireland Executive’s Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) closed its three-month consultation on Guidance on the Termination of Pregnancy: The Law and Clinical Practice in Northern Ireland. Dr Cathal Cassidy, chair of the Northern Ireland Division, submitted this response on behalf of the College.
