Commenting on the publication of the
Children and
Young People's Health Outcomes Forum report today, Professor
Sue Bailey, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said:
"We welcome this excellent report from the
Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Forum. We are
particularly pleased to see the emphasis that the report places on
the mental health of children and mothers, and the importance of
acting early and intervening at the right point.
"The report correctly points out that some
clinical staff do not have sufficient training in mental health to
be able to undertake their work with children and young people
safely and well. On the back of this report, our College is looking
forward to working with other professional bodies to undertake a
scoping project to identify and address the issues of providing a
safe and sustainable children and young people’s healthcare
workforce.
"We agree with the Forum that there is a
worrying lack of data on children and young people with poor
physical and mental health or disability, and the impact of this on
their education. We are therefore pleased to see the Forum
recommending the development of a new survey to support measurement
of outcomes for children with mental health problems."
