Kurdistan Visit

June 2007

A delegation from the Iraq Sub-committee of the Board of International Affairs of the college visited Iraqi Kurdistan 8-15 June 2007.

The delegation consisted of Majid Al-Yassiri, Riadh Abed, Mohammed Al-Uzri and Rizgar Amin.

The purpose of the visit was to establish a link between the college and mental health services within Iraqi Kurdistan through the extension of the college senior volunteer scheme to that part of Iraq.

The delegation was warmly received by the top officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government and by colleagues within the medical schools, universities, nursing schools and mental health units.

We are hoping that the visit will lay the foundation for future visits by college members through the senior volunteer scheme to offer help and expertise to Iraqi Kurdistan in the areas of under and postgraduate education, service planning and development as well as direct clinical work.

This link can then become a model for a future link with mental health services in the rest of Iraq when conditions there permit.
