Grades of membership

 

 Membership at the Royal College of Psychiatrists

 

Membership

The normal route to Membership of the College requires 30 months post foundation/internship experience in Psychiatry AND a pass in ALL components of the MRCPsych Examinations.

Full details of Examinations are available via the Examinations section of the website. Full details of Membership are sent to successful candidates.

Specialist Associateship

Specialist Associateship of the College is open to registered medical practitioners working in the United Kingdom and who meet the following criteria:

 

  • At least 5 years experience in psychiatry.
  • Specialist training which has been assessed in the United Kingdom as being at least equivalent to a full programme of specialist training in psychiatry in the United Kingdom.
  • Support from two sponsors who are subscribing Members or Fellows of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We have quarterly entry points (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October),  to register from 1 April 2017 the fees are: £179 (one-off registration fee) and £321 (subscription fee for the remaining 9 months) making a total of £500. The annual fee will next be due the following January and can be paid by Direct Debit for the lowest rate.

Please send the application forms to membership@rcpsych.ac.uk or by post to the Membership Office at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Once your Specialist Associateship has been approved you will be contacted with regard to making payment.

 

Affiliateship

Affiliateship is open to psychiatrists in the Specialty Doctor, Staff Grade and other Non-Consultant Career Grade posts such as Clinical Assistant and Associate Specialist. Other job titles are sometimes used to describe such posts, and individual consideration might be given to doctors in other grades, not specified above, but who are nevertheless working in Psychiatry.

This grade enables psychiatrists who are not in training grades or substantive consultant posts, and who do not have the MRCPsych, to join the College.

Affiliateship of the College is open to registered medical practitioners working in the United Kingdom and who meet the following criteria:

 

  • Have support from two sponsors who are subscribing Members, Fellows or Specialist Associate of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Do not hold the MRCPsych qualification
  • Do not hold specialist registration
  • Are not in an approved training post, substantive consultant post or honorary consultant post

The College is keen to recruit doctors in Specialty Doctor and Associate Specialist posts to Affiliateship, particularly where they may have registered just for the College CPD scheme as non-members - that scheme is now closed.

There are quarterly entry points to the grade (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October).  To register from 1 April 2017 the fees are: £179 (one-off registration fee) and £275.25 (subscription fee for the remaining 9 months) making a total of £454.25. The annual fee will next be due the following January and can be paid by Direct Debit for the lowest rate.

Pre-Membership Psychiatric Trainee

The Pre-Membership Psychiatric Trainee grade is for all doctors in a Core Trainee post, and entitles trainees to access the Portfolio Online and the College journals online.  All trainees are required to be registered with the College as set out in the "Gold Guide".


Fellowship

Fellowship of the College is awarded as a mark of distinction and recognition of contributions to psychiatry. As it is a College award, candidates and citators are asked to demonstrate and evidence significant contributions to the core purposes of the Royal College of Psychiatrists: 

·         Setting standards and promoting excellence in mental health care.

·         Leading, representing and supporting psychiatrists.

·         Working with service users, carers and their organisations.

Candidates are invited also to document their contributions to the College's stated aim of patient centred practice through: Professionalism, innovation and research, lifelong learning, fairness and inclusion, ethical practice and multi-disciplinary working. If successful, Fellows are entitled to use the designation ‘FRCPsych’ once they have paid the prescribed registration fee.

Nominees for the Fellowship must be subscribing Members of the College at the time when nominations are submitted. Sponsors will be notified if this is not the case.

Nominations are considered annually by College committees.

All Members who have achieved 10 years in Membership as at 1 January 2017 are encouraged to consider applying for Fellowship for the 2017/2018 round. The deadline for submission is 30 June 2017.

All applications received will be submitted to the Nominations Committee for consideration. The outcome of the decisions made by the Nominations Committee will be sent to the applicants in October / November.

Nominations for the College Fellowship must be supported by two Sponsors, both of whom must be subscribing Members of the College.

Please print and complete the CV form, Citation form - Fellowship and Good Standing Form and send to the Membership Operations Unit at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

 


 

 

International Associateship

There are two routes to International Associateship for 2016 - the standard route for all applicants and a special scheme for current members of the American Psychiatric Association. 

 
Am I eligible?
 
International Associateship may be awarded to psychiatrists with five years’ experience in psychiatry who do not hold the MRCPsych, but who hold a specialist qualification in psychiatry and who reside outside the UK.
 

How much does it cost each year?

Fees are banded according to World Bank classifications

How do I join? 

  • Applicants under the standard scheme please download the standard form and send to Membership Section, Royal College of Psychiatrists, 21 Prescot Street, London, E1 8BB, UK or by email to membership@rcpsych.ac.uk. Please include copies of your certificates of medical registration and psychiatric qualification, with English translations if not in English.  We must have these to process your application.

 

  • APA Scheme - Please download the APA scheme forms.  When they are completed please send to Membership Data Office, Royal College of Psychiatrists, 21 Prescot Street, London, E1 8BB, UK or by email to membership@rcpsych.ac.uk.  Please include also copies of your certificates of current medical registration and of your qualification as a psychiatrist.  If these aren't in English please include translations. We must have these to process your application. Don't send any payment at this stage.

If you are applying under the APA scheme you do not need to supply a supporting statement (citation) because the College will arrange this on your behalf.  Please mark the citation form "APA member - applying under this scheme".

 

What happens next?

Your application will be checked. We will write back to you to confirm acceptance and explain how to pay the fee to complete your registration. Once this is received your welcome pack will be sent and your mailings and other benefits will start.
