Dr Fiona Mason

As the new Associate Registrar for Leadership
and Management, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce
myself. I am a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Chief Medical
Officer at St Andrew’s Healthcare, the largest charitable provider
of NHS care. Prior to working at St Andrew’s I was a Consultant at
Broadmoor Hospital. I have published on a number of subjects and
regularly teach on women’s mental health, and healthcare
management.
I was Chair of the Women in Psychiatry Special
Interest Group from 2007 – 2011, a member of the Medical Directors
Executive Group and a founding member of the Leadership &
Management Committee.
Clear, effective actions
I have a hard act to follow; my predecessor,
Dr Neil Deuchar, achieved a great deal during his tenure, putting
leadership and management at the heart of psychiatric practice.
I plan to continue this work, and will be
focusing, with the Committee members, and Special Advisor Michael
Hobkirk, on translating the College Strategy into clear, effective
actions. I believe that psychiatric leadership is fundamental to
services, ensuring safety, clinical effectiveness and improved
patient experiences. Psychiatrists need to be deeply involved in
service management and development, improving health for all. I
believe it essential work across all specialities and will focus on
education, networks and comprehensive membership engagement.
Contact
I would welcome your thoughts and ideas, and
look forward to meeting some of you at the inaugural Faculty of
Leadership and Management Conference in October. Please do also
contact me via email.
