Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention Competence Framework

Health Education England (HEE) has commissioned the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) to develop a self-harm and suicide prevention competence framework. This framework will bear resemblance to those previously developed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and University College London’s Centre for Outcomes Research and Effectiveness (CORE). The framework will be relevant to a wide audience from many different professional bodies as well as the general public.

Alongside the framework, a review of past and existing self-harm and suicide prevention strategies will be completed. This review will help to inform the competence framework by extracting professional competences required to deliver the strategies.

This body of work should help to direct the delivery of training programmes, policies and other future suicide prevention strategies.

 

The NCCMH is recruiting for the following positions to support this work:


Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry and/ or Clinical Psychology and/or Nurse specialist

Expert Reference Group Members for Children and Young People

The NCCMH would like to hear from those with experience of one or more of the following:

  • People who work in educational settings with an interest in mental health (for example, Head Teacher, an Educational Psychologist or educators)
  • A GP
  • A paediatrician
  • An emergency department representative who might see children and young people in A&E
  • Mental health service managers who train, manage and supervise staff
  • Senior children’s service managers (for example from Social Care or Education Child Protection team- Children, Families and Adults Services (CFAS))
  • A CAMHS Specialist who specialise in the prevention and management of Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention ( for example, Consultant Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologist, Nurse Therapist or Clinical Nurse Specialist)
  • A general CAMHS practitioner ( for example, Consultant Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologist, Nurse Therapist or Clinical Nurse Specialist)
  • A Third sector representative, specialising in helping children who self-harm or who experience suicidal thoughts
  • An academic whose research specialises in self-harm and suicide prevention in children and young people
  • Service users
  • Carers or family members
