CCQI Core Standards for Inpatient and Community-Based Services

Background

CCQI has multiple sets of standards for specialised services which it was found contained some unwanted variation. This had the potential to contribute to variation in levels of care. The CCQI therefore engaged the British Standards Institution (BSI) to facilitate a review of 17 of its existing sets of standards. The aim of this work was to re-categorise and amalgamate the existing 17 sets to ultimately produce one set of core standards for inpatient wards and one set of core standards for community care which can be used across these specialties.

The Project

The CCQI and BSI undertook a review of the existing sets of standards to identify standards which were ‘core’ to all inpatient or community mental health services. These core standards then underwent an extensive review process. A steering group and a reference group made up of clinical, patient and carer experts enabled representation from each of the different specialties whose standards were used in this project. Feedback was also sought from other sources including CCQI staff, the chair persons of the CCQI advisory groups and representatives from the college’s faculties and divisions.

How the core standards will be used

The quality network and accreditation projects will use the set of core standards most relevant to them (i.e. inpatient or community). Each project will adopt these core standards which will be used alongside their own specialist standards. The standards have also been linked to the CQC’s ‘Regulations for service providers and managers, 2014’.
