National Clinical Audit of Psychosis

What is the National Clinical Audit of Psychosis (NCAP)?

The National Clinical Audit of Psychosis (NCAP) is a three-year improvement programme which aims to increase the quality of care that NHS Mental Health Trusts in England and Health Boards in Wales provide to people with psychosis. Commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership on behalf of NHS England, NCAP is the next phase in the development of the National Audit of Schizophrenia. The scope of the new audit has been extended to include both inpatient and community care provided for people with a broader group of severe mental health problems.

Key areas of performance will include the assessment and treatment of physical health, health promotion, prescribing practice, use of evidence-based psychological treatments and access to services at times of crisis. The audit programme will also include a more detailed examination of the quality of care provided by Early Intervention in Psychosis teams and forensic mental health services.

For all aspects of the audits, participating services will be able to compare their performance with national standards and benchmark their performance against other services.

Year 1: Core audit

The first year of the audit (2017-18) will comprise an audit of practice, for which data collection will take place in October/November 2017.

The core audit will examine care being provided to people with a psychosis by inpatient and outpatient services using the core audit standards, derived from the 2014 NICE schizophrenia guidance.

The NCAP report will be available in June 2018.
